Michael Miller Challenge

At our last meeting (PMQG) we were given fabrics from Michael Millers Cotton Couture line. They were to be used to create a challenge block for our next meeting

http://portlandmodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/2012/03/march-meeting-two-quilting-events.html

This is the little bundle of fabric.....along with a few rules.....

A nice mix of colors to work with.

I started to design my block.....

I knew I wanted a couple of wonky churn dashes in there
These were my first two elements.

and then that dark grey needed to be added....

and adding a few more of the colored pieces in to balance it.

and there you have it.
The block had to measure 15 1/2" by 18 1/2"
a little larger than my usual block.....
Let me tell you it was a bit of a challenge!

Granny Square

A while back I posted about a QAL I was participating in. The Granny Square QAL on Flickr with the group Old Red Barn Co. I finished 20 blocks and decided to add a different border around them rather than just a plain white one. It took a little math and figuring, but today I finished the top. Here are a few pictures fo the process.

Since the blocks were set on point, I thought the squares in the border should be too.

and the corners needed a little more to them .

This is what I played with on my design wall.

and here is the finished top.
Got a picture of it outside just as the rain was starting to fall.
It was a very productive day at the sewing machine.
I am loving this quilt top.

Love to try out new blocks and work in the stash.....

A Celebration of Life

Saying goodbye today to a friend /coworker, whose life was cut way to short. It makes me chrerish what I have. I have worked with her for over 30 years. Our children  have grown up together. She will be missed by so many. Grace and Dignity, these two simple words truly characterized her. Her pain is over, she lies in his arms.

Granny Square

Do you all remember the Granny Square afghan. I think they started gaining popularity in the 70's. I think my niece made my son a red, white, and blue version in the early 80's , and my MIL made us a blue and Mauve version for our blue van. Mauve was so 80's ! Just put Granny Square Afghan in the Google Image search and you will see what I mean if you don't know  about them,
.

Well now I am  seeing a quilt version of this. Let me tell you there are some pretty ones out there. and of course one of the Flickr QAL groups (Old Red Barn Co.) that I follow has one this month.I think what started it was this quilt......

I never could get the hang of crochet, so .....Go ahead shoot me now, I have started yet another project. Yes that's right I said another project. I had to try just one block.....and it was like eating potato chips....You know what that means......

They really are pretty, kind of fussy to make. I have been able to pull all of the colored pieces from my 2 1/2 inch scrap box. That's good right? Use it up. Right like that will ever happen.....

.....I am liking them.

12 done so far....................
